Planning Magazine is seen as essential reading for everyone in the planning sector, including local authorities and developers.
“This is absolutely amazing news for such a young organisation and for our hosting of our first design charrette” says Vanessa Gregory. “To reach this stage is down to all who took part in the design charrette and all those who help shape our draft design codes. The desire and commitment shown by members of the community to raise the bar in placemaking in central St Albans should not be underestimated.
We all knew at the outset this was a sensitive site as the Museum of St Albans building is held in great affection by the community. From the beginning of the design charrette we all knew the proceeds would go towards the new museum and gallery and together we needed to produce a development befitting the site, used sustainable building methods and was energy efficient. The winning design concept was a stunning result of working together at the very start of the process. Whether we win or not we should all be extremely proud of reaching the shortlists.”
For most this was their first design charrette and a leap of faith. Debbi White, Property & Asset Manager, St Albans City & District Council said “When it was suggested to me that Look! St Albans should host a design charrette using their community endorsed design codes it was a new concept to me and I didn't know what to expect. I soon realised however that it's a great way of bringing together people with different interests and agendas. The scale building blocks (a part of the design codes) were a useful and fun tool for getting people to work towards a common goal.
There is a wealth of knowledge, skill and some great ideas out there and a design charrette is a way for developers to tap into this.”
