“The St Albans charrette is the very first detailed, public design process which Boultbee LDN have engaged in, despite having owned 28 shopping centres in the UK, 27 across Scandinavia and at least 30 city centre office buildings. It will no doubt have been clear that we were initially sceptical about the delivery of a genuinely well designed, viable and widely appreciated concept, through this process. I am very pleased to say that we have been converted to it and even intend to replicate it in the future.
The work done by both Look! St Albans and ImaginePlaces in delivering a clear masterplan brief for the CCOS site has been impressive. More specifically, the pace of the design charrette has provided for significant quantities of mutual learning in a very short period of time, amongst a wide range of stakeholders. There have been many good ideas addressing critical issues such as the wide range of associated risks, delivery implications, the mix of uses and development quantum. Being so involved during the design workshops has also allowed us to showcase our own aspirations and capability in a much more productive and nonconfrontational way.
We believe that working together with so many local stakeholders, the other landowners, using the to scale 3D props and independent facilitators, has been a particular effective way of combining design work and community alignment with important viability considerations. We now have every expectation that the strong stakeholder directive provided to the local planners, will assist both, them and ourselves in achieving economic and aesthetic enhancement of St Albans city centre through our development projects."
